IDC estimates that there will be approximately 212 billion ‘things’ globally by the end of 2020. Extreme Networks estimates that 5 billion people will have internet access by then.
According to ABI Research, more than 30 billion devices will be wirelessly connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) by 2020.
So, what is Internet of Things?
The internet of things is a rapidly growing gold rush technology which aims connect all devices to the internet. Conventionally, only computers, tablets, smart phones had microprocessors and the capacity to connect to the internet. When the usage of internet boomed in the 90s, people realized that if they could connect all appliances and devices which were dumb and were operated by humans to the internet, it would bring in a great deal of automation and efficiency. This basically sums up the ideology of the Internet of Things or IoT.
